Info Request: Margay Gearboxes?

Post by John Miller » Thu Dec 31, 2009 8:00 pm

Looking for links & information on the Margay Gearboxes.

What date range where these boxes manufactured?

Where there different models? If so, what were they & how would you ID them?

How were they usually mounted & how does the engine & brakes mount up?

Was there a certain model of kart developed for these gear boxes or vise-versa?

Thank you

John, some info is on the Margay.com site, under the vintage tab, then click on the brochures. Terry

I've always thought the gearboxes looked like a great setup. Although I've wondered how much power is lost to gearbox friction? Any ideas?

Hi John,
Hope these pictures give you an idea how a Dual MarGay Gearbox setup looks. This is my Rupp Chapparral Enduro I've had for 40 years in a crawl space under my house. My brother-in-law still had the gearbox and both 91A engines I sold him in 1970.
Hope these pics gives you an idea how look. As you can see the right engine mounts to the gearbox in reverse. I seen a setup where they just turned the engine upside down and put the carb on a stuffer manifold. There are a few parts missing in the pictures. It was cold in the garage last night.
