I did it way back in 1959, but I can't remember the details. I'm sure we used some Clinton saw crank, crankcase cover and shroud but don't know which ones. The ports were like the E-65's and we ran a Tilly carb on it. We eased the port entrances, but didn't do much else. I only remember that it was lots faster than my A-400 Clinton. It didn't stay around long, as we bought twin E-65's to put on my Bug. They didn't stay around long either... TJ

Steve, not only did the stock dual 580's eat my dual E-65's for lunch, but the most obnoxious guy we had in our circle back then beat me with a single very early AH-58, one of the "vibrators". He even had 13" rear tires to drag it down! My E-65's were the "Deluxe" version, with Tillotson diaphragm carbs. Big shot me, I called our PP distributor and got a brand new shiny white AH-58. It vibrated so bad I couldn't stand to drive it. I might have put half an hour total on it. Pop called Bob McCulloch and got an early Mc6... problem solved! As far as the E-65 went, I think it needed a good reed and a Mac flatback carb. The Tilly on the E-65 was tiny. Physically strong engine, but not very quick.

Ted, Steve,

I'm thinking a decent E65 will stay with a 3 port 580.
If somebody wants to bring a 580 to TBO, I'll bring an E65. Or two. Or three.

Well, I won't be bringing a 580 to TBO, but I'd hate to bet against Terry's E-65's! They always run (and run, and run) good for him. Maybe it would be a fun thing to watch a battle of the cross-scavenged beasts! What other 6 C.I. cross-scavengers can we bring out of mothballs?
