Margay New Breed Rear Rim/Tire Questions

Post by Keith CoBen » Fri Nov 15, 2013 4:59 pm

Hello. I have a '69 Margay New Breed kart with a single Mac 93. From what I can tell Margay offered rims in 1", 1.5" and 2" for this kart so you could create several widths and offsets.

Three questions...

What size were the rear rims that would have come stock on a 1969 single-engine Margay New Breed?
What size were the stock rear tires for this kart?
What size rear rims and tires work best on this kart?

Thank you,

Keith

Keith,

Not positive what was offered as OEM equipment from Margay but considering your karts model and year plus your running a single a 410/350-5 tire is what would give you a 'period' correct appearance and good performance safely.

410/350's are rated at 3 1/2 inches wide tread width so on Margay wheels a pair of 1inchers or a 1inch and a 1-1/2 inch combo should work and look good.

Go with a 4 ply sidewall, 2 ply tend to roll over too much in the turns. Make sure that the tire also has a 'squared' off edge where the contact patch area meets the side wall of the tire. A modern style rounded or radiused edge will also offer way too much sidebite.

Don't overtire [wide] the kart. Too wide is slower in a straight line and too much side bite causes tip [flip].

Cheng Shin tires are the best bang for your buck and they are available from http://www.apskarting.com

Hope this helps and enjoy the slide...R.E.A.R.

Keith,
Width of the wheels and tires depended on the class the cart was being raced in. if you check out the Margay website and take a look at the vintage ads image #43 has a table of specification for the New Breed. This link will take you to the page. http://www.margay.com/vintage/vintage-ads.html
