Identifying a West Bend 610?

Happy New Year Guys!

I'm coming to the knowledge Bank looking for help!

Does anyone know how to identify a West Bend 610 if there is NO ID tag on the engine? I know they look very similar to the 820. What would the cylinder block P/N's be or are they even identified??? Outside of removing the head and measuring the bore, I don't know any external clues.

Thinking this would be a great engine for our 1963 Bug Wasp (like in the KW road test!).

Any and all help appreciated.

Hey, Terry. There's no external difference between a 610 and an 820. If you can see in the exhaust port, the 610 has a cast iron liner in the cylinder and the 820 does not. You may be able to see the edge of the darker liner on the 610 thru the port. The difference in bore is great, as the 610 is 2.1875 against the 820's 2.531. You may be able to estimate the bore thru the port. The crank and rod are the same, as are all the ignition and carburetion pieces. There are service manuals here on REAR, but I don't think there are any parts lists. I'm not sure if there's a casting number difference or not in the block. If you remove the head, the difference is obvious. TJ

Sounds like a 6" scale slid in the exhaust should be enough to tell.

820 has a chrome 'wall', the 610 is steel. you might have this tool in your box. it's pencil in shape with a magnet on one end. thru the exhaust port, insert toward '9' port side and feel the pull and attachment to the steel wall...........some of us back then, did have an 820 bored and a steel liner inserted soooo, but that was rare and you can tell. try the 'pencil'
