Kart ID ????

Post by Phil Riley » Thu May 07, 2009 9:43 pm

Hi everyone. Someday I`ll get a vintage kart without a Briggs or Lawnmower tires but in the meantime I need some help to identify this kart. It has a enclosed live axle and a air filter element mounted behind the seatback. Also has little knock-off type hubcaps. I was told this is a SEARS kart but if so who might the mfg. have been? As always any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Phil.

Yep it's a Sears and looks to be in good shape with the stock air cleaner.
Put a 580 or 2 on there and you in business.

Hi Phil, I had one of these when I was a kid and drove it all over the neighborhood like it was a car. I picked up one again a few years ago and still have it.

I used to go to the Sears store in Memphis and drool over that kart. It looks cool from the front and back more so than from the side. They were sold on the Sears showroom floor in the lawnmower department. The first one I bought was used and had the 3.5 hp briggs engine that came with it new. You could get one or two AH-58 engines for extra.

I have never seen the seat back aircleaner except in pictures. Neither of my karts came with one (both mine were purchased used and I think most everyone took them off). I have always wanted to get one of those cleaners. Others have asked about them also. Looks like it would be easy to make if I had a pattern. What filter element is that?

I do not know who made the kart and they made it exclusively for Sears as far as I have been able to find out.

Good, somewhat detailed pictures of the karts, along with accessories can be seen in the Sears "Farm and Garden Supplements" between about 61 and 63. You can find the supplements on Ebay pretty cheap sometimes.

The regular big Sears catalogs have a pretty good picture and discription, but the supplements have several pages on karts. If you like, i'll scan the pages from the supplement for you. It may be a few days, i'll have to find the supplement......Ron

P.S. The upholstery and steering wheel is not correct. All else looks un molested. They came with slicks from Sears, even the one with the Briggs

Hey Phil, those air filters are hard to come by. Would you consider selling that one or could I talk you into taking a piece of paper or something and drawing an actual size pattern of the sides and mail it to me? The filter element looks like a standard automotive unit. There should be an element part number on it. I'll try to make a couple up for others who might want one. Thanks...Ron

Hi Ron. I just got back from the Springfield event and back at my computer. I`ll be more than glad to get you a tracing and dimentions and an element part # if there is one. Let me know where to send it? Good luck with your project, Phil.

I think I have a Gas tank for that kart. The tank I have is red and says SEAR KART 400.

Hi Glen. I would like to see a pic of the tank and a price if it is for sale. Thanks, Phil.
