Klotz Benol

I'd like to hear from people who've used Klotz "Benol" lube with gasoline in fan cooled 2 cycles. Does it mix well and not separate? Good lubrication qualities? How bad is clean-up? What ratio are you using? Sorry for the silly sounding questions, but I haven't used gasoline since '63, and I used Mac mineral oil back then. Thanks. Ted

Ted,
This isn't the answer you asked for, but I know you wanted to make your efforts easier by switching to gasoline ... that is my goal also with my "fun" motors ... mostly older McCullochs. So, with that in mind, I don't run any castor oil in those motors, only Klotz synthetic, the old plain Techniplate 16:1 (not the Super Techniplate, which is 20% Benol). If you want to run some Benol castor, try the Super Techniplate, its a blend of benol and standard synthetic Techniplate, mixes great with gas of methanol ... but if you want to limit residue buildup and not worry about gumming up castor (not that I have ever seen it with Super Techniplate) ... go with the plain Techniplate. Last weekend all I ran was gasoline and plain Techniplate at 16:1.

Thanks, Jeff. I'll probably go that way, or with the FHS62R. I hadn't thought about leaving the gummy castor in the engines, and I sure don't want to have to purge any more! TJ

Hey Ted,
I was using Klotz super techniplate at 16:1 but it turned my piston walls black and I am quite vain about my pistons so I changed to RedLine 2 cycle kart oil at 20:1 on Terry Ives recommendation. So far it is working great and my pistons are staying nice and shiny. The Redline also doesn't smell bad after the engine has been run, that klotz w/castor smell bugged me. The Redline is about 4x as expensive as Koltz though so I may try the Klotz full synthetic like Jeff recommended but at 16:1. Makes economic sense.

I run nothing but HiTest gas in my engines. Alky is just too much hassle and I'm not that hard on them anyway.

Thanks, Terry and Scott. Looks like there are several really good oils to choose from. I've used Klotz, and also Chuck West's pre-mix in the past with good results. Ron C. uses FHS62R, and I know it's popular with 2 cycle race bikes. It may be easier if Ron and I use the same fuel, as we'll be doing some Western vintage trips together, and we'll have my engines as well as Sue's. My main deal is to have good reliability, and NOT to have to purge castor out of the system after each event. With alky/castor, I always take the pump stack off the carbs and blow them out, even though I've purged with gas and mineral oil. With a good lube and gas, I shouldn't have to do that anymore. With the sloper manifold and the Mikuni on the 101, you have to remove the carb to get at the pumper stack, as it's very close to the shroud. PITA!
