Recommended blind wrist pin puller?

Post by Kurt Bogerman » Sat Nov 11, 2017 10:58 pm

Gentlemen,

What wrist pin puller do you recommend for pulling 1/2" McCulloch blind wrist pins? I need one, but there seems to be a lot of junk out there. Which ones work?

Thanks!!!

Are you asking about the solid side piston or the capped bearing?

I am referring to the solid side piston. Needs to be pulled out, not pressed through.

I purchased a used "Pin Pal" on ebay several years ago. Unfortunately, when I received it, the threads on the mandrel were knackered. Shouldn't these be LH threads anyway?

Have a similar one. Threads wore out so I drilled it out & put a stud in there. They work fine. Be sure to lube threads.

Rob,

Did your stud have RH or LH threads? Mine has RH threads, though I've always wondered if someone had modified it. Maybe I don't understand how to properly use the tool as a puller, but if the piston/rod assembly is inside the ring with the mandrel inserted through the wrist pin, and you are turning the t-handle counter-clockwise, thereby extracting the pin, won't the nut on the end of the mandrel stud back it's way off?

Thanks for your advice, by the way, on this and my other topics elsewhere.

Kurt

That special thin small OD nut is put on but first you have to reverse the big nut. Put it face to face and a little grease on the faces don't hurt. Then you "tighten" that large nut (lube threads) to "pull" the wrist pin out. The T Handle don't really move. It takes a little HP to get it moving. Warming the rod with a heat lamp don't hurt things any and an extra hand is helpful also.

Aha! I was beginning to wonder if that was the trick. Thank you again!

I made a new round nut for the puller tonight and was able to extract the pin, despite the damaged threads. I'll probably have the tool repaired with a new stud anyway, now that the current matter has been addressed. Thanks for clarifying the correct use of the tool, Rob.
