Need advice on building an electric starter

I've been using a converted Mac chainsaw to start my kart engines, but I think an electric starter would be easier. At least I would be able to hear the kart engine starting or trying to start! I would probably use the pulley/belt method as opposed to a starter/nut.

A few questions:
- Can somebody tell me a good car starter to use? I saw the tech article on this site with a Honda starter, but it doesn't give me a part number or year Honda starter to look for.
- Do you remove/disable the solenoid action that extends the pinion?

Any advice would be appreciated.
I would consider a used starter, but I prefer to make my own mistakes. That way I have stories to tell my friends ( if I had any friends ).

I'll sell you the first one I build, which will be ugly and will probably only work when I don't need it to.

Just built one of these a couple weeks ago with help from the guys on the forum. The Azusa Kart Start frames are still around and can be had. While I won't post anyone's contact info on a open forum without their permission, you can PM me for the info. Use a Ford 6volt starter motor. FYI, I used the following parts:

Not sure but think I used a mid 90's prelude starter. Why? Rebuilt starter on ebay was like $30. The gear reduction is great for a high torque starter so it can be small & light. All you really need is a push button to get it juice & remove the deal that slides the drive gear into the ring gear on the Honda & your in business.

I wanted a starter that didn't have the external support so the shaft runs in brg's. Heck lets do this the fun way get a starter pull the drive apart & start asking questions!
