1961 McCulloch Kart original unrestored with MC6

Hey Gents!

Would anyone be interested in a really nice McCulloch kart with an MC6, most of the kart in original condition? I just bought the kart and have to go pick it up in the morning, so I don't yet have better photos than what I post here now.

I was told the MC6 was put on the kart recently, after the photos were snapped. It has good compression and was running well when removed from the kart. The brake system is with the kart but is not mounted right now. One inner wheel rim has a chunk out of it. The kart and engine are one owner, I am the second to own it.

I am not sure if I want to restore and keep it or sell it. It looks good enough to run it as is. Maybe money does talk...

PM your contact info and we can talk about the kart. Thanks.

Kind Regards, Joe

Hey Steve,

I see your post and got your email. It was raining when I got the kart home so I put it away immediately. As soon as I get another sunny day here in paradise I will snap some photos and post some on here as well as email some to you. The sun might even come out before I finish typing this.

The guy I got the kart from told me a little bit about it. He got it in 1962 as a birthday gift when he turned 8, from his dad. His dad was in the US Air Force, stationed over in Europe at an airbase. There was some sort of traveling exhibit touring the US bases that had this 1961 McCulloch kart with the MC6 on it. His dad bought the kart and gave it to his son. The guy use to sit in the kart and his dad would push start him to get going with the direct drive. He would drive it around inside of one of the airplane hangers, doing donuts and drifting it in big circles. You can see how the inside edge of the tires are worn from how he drove the kart. The last time he said he drove it was in 1966. It has been sitting in his garage since, hence how nice the kart is now.

When I got my hands on the kart today, the guy I bought it from had mounted the brake system. Most of the parts on the kart are only finger tight. He said he put the engine and brakes on since I was coming to pick up the kart. He did not want me to pick up a kart and a box with parts in it LOL.

The tri-star wheels are in ok shape for their age. You can see where they had been painted silver and the paint is chipping off. They just need to be bead blasted to look like new again and/or put a new coat of silver paint on them. A person should be able to buy a inner wheel half or a whole wheel to replace the left rear broken rim. The Firestones are original to the kart from 1961, still with about half their tread left. One tire has some minor sidewall cracks, but I think it is still usable. I would use the Firestones just as display tires and get some new Azusa tri-star wheels and new Cheng Shin tires to actually drive the kart. The new wheels and tires are pretty cheap as far as kart parts go.

The yellow paint on the frame is in really good shape for a 50 year old kart. The frame appears to be straight. There are a few spots where the paint is cracked but I did not see anyplace where it was chipping off. I need to get the kart up on a workstand for a better look in the next few days. The seatback tank is in great shape. The original padded and upholstered seat is in great shape with just some minor cracks here and there. I would use it for display but get a new one made to drive the kart. The steering wheel is really nice with a few paint scrapes on it, no rust. The clear plastic steering wheel hub with McCulloch logo inside has a crack in it, but the rest of it looks pretty good. I don't know where or if a new one could be bought. The gas and brake pedals look sweet. The mechanical brake works fine.

The throttle linkage is all there in great working condition. The engine mount looks good. The MC6 engine has a large chunk missing from the fan shroud, but this does not effect the engine operating in any way. I am sure somebody has a replacement shroud for sale for about $20 to $50. The crankshaft has a direct drive sprocket on it. I turned this sprocket by hand and the engine has great compression. I am sure the engine will fire and run no problem. I will take the sparkplug out and look in the cylinder this weekend. The exhaust on the engine is just a short little spout sticking out about an inch from the head.

I will post photos as soon as I get them.

Kind Regards, Joe

Hi Joe,
Wow! That's a great story from the original owner. Thanks for the very informative description on the Kart. Sounds like a true survivor. Please keep me in mind as you make more discoveries about this kart.
Sounds like you have your week planned out. LOL! Please send pictures when you can.
Much appreciated.

Hey Gents!

I snapped 28 photos after the rain stopped as the sun was setting. Here is one shot to wet everyone's appetite for this McCulloch kart. I really like the kart shot at this angle. It makes the kart look agressive.

If you copy and zoom in on the photo you can see the chunk out of the left rear inner wheel. If anyone is interested in buying the kart, I have a set of 8 photos ready to email. Just give me your email address.

I am interested in getting feedback from those people whom have other McCulloch karts on what you think this kart is worth. Thanks for your input and for everyone's interest in the kart.

Kind Regards, Joe

It's worth a bunch, but more importantly sell to someone who will bring it to events...

Hi Virg,

Thanks for the reply. How much is a bunch? LOL! Steve is interested in buying the kart and going to TBO. I am sure he will do the kart well and take it to several events. What a great way to start off your entry to vintage karts. Start with one of the best known names in karting, with a McCulloch kart!

I would like an actual dollar range of approximate value for karts of this caliber to know how to price the kart for Steve and anyone interested in it. Thanks for your help.

Kind Regards, Joe

Have you looked at the economy lately? If a beautiful fully restored McCulloch Kart with dual Mc20s would not bring $2500, I'd say the market is really tough... So Good Luck... I'm not a business man. I usually pay way too much for stuff, I don't sell hardly anything and I 've always regreted selling what little I have let go... But, when I do sell stuff, I just try to cover my expenses not make a killing. So sell it for what you paid it for plus enough to cover your expenses and trouble... Like Dave says these things are more like money pits than profit opportunites...

Hey Gents,

The interested buyer with the $1,300 offer bailed today because he did not want to deal with trying to figure out a good way to ship the kart.

The kart is still available.

Kind Regards, Joe
