I digress but back in the day we used wintergreen oil on our slot car tires. Everybody used it so the slot car track club smelled like wintergreen all the time.

I guess it is still used in grip formulas. I guess that is how they go so fast around the track that they look like a blurr. Thanks Rob, now I know the secret!! ;)

OK,
I got the 100% wintergreen oil $$$ and a gallon of Xylene.
Added 2 oz wintergreen oil to 6 oz Xylene and soaked 2 rock hard plug covers for 24 hours.
I checked them at 12 hours and they were still hard but tonight the were very soft and slightly swollen. As the xylene evaporates the should return to original size and I am hoping they stay soft. I will check in after a week or so and status the parts.
I am keeping my fingers crossed, I have a bunch of hardened covers.

I've ordered 2 small bottles of the "Rubber Renue". We'll see if it works; it costs enough, but you're not supposed to have to soak the pieces. Randy is looking to see if he may have some small boots.

Thanks, Big Dave! I certainly appreciate you checking. Just painted the shroud, and will bake it out tomorrow. All that's left on engine number two is the mount side plate, manifold and carb and the shroud and boot! Then I can get them mounted and set up on the Van Tech! TJ

Well, I have tried the "Rubber Renue" on (2) Mac 7 plug covers. It softened them, but they re-hardened after a matter of hours. There are no instructions on the bottle, only warnings. The MG Chemicals web page said to brush or daub it on with a brush, rag or swab. I brushed it on twice. I'm not real happy with it. NOW, I need TWO soft boots! TJ

My 7 soaked boots are still completely soft and look great. One problem, after the Xylene evaporated, the smell of wintergreen is so strong I had to take them out back to my storage building. The smell makes me sick. It was nice at first but now it is sickening. After 5 days they still stink. Hopefully the smell will diminish with time, we'll see. That stuff is wicked!!

Ted, does the Rubber Renue smell like oil of wintergreen?

Hi, Scott. The Rubber Renue is supposed to have the same Xylene/wintergreen formula as everyone discussed, but I imagine that there are also proprietary ingredients. Yep, the whole garage still smells of wintergreen, and I don't like it all that much, either! I didn't soak them, only brushed the stuff on with an acid brush. I think the second app has helped, but I haven't gone out there yet today. Think I'll wait till after b'fast! The boot is all that's keeping me from finishing Mc7 No. 2. TJ
