When did Bug go to the smaller seat rails. I thought the early models (69/70) had 1" rails and they went to the smaller rails later...

Virg,
You are correct, the earliest Stingers had the seat back and side rails made of 1" tubing and the cross member at the rear of the seat was welded in place. Also, the left side of the seat back was welded on the left side frame rail about an inch and a half forward of the intersection of the main frame and cross member so the seat back was not parallel with the rear axle. Later models switched to a bolt in cross member that supported the seat back hoop and the seat back and side rails were switched to 3/4" tubing. In that version both legs of the seat back hoop land on the cross member so the seat back is parallel to the rear axle. The net effect was a seat that was narrower at the back and pretty much impossible to sit all the way back in for anybody bigger than the Adkins boys

I had three different Stingers that were all built prior to mid 70 and all three were the early type. Maybe they made the changes late 70???
Good memory!
