I was told this was the identifing mark for the Hands. Guess my sources could be wrong. I had came up with this mount for my Xterminator, but ended up selling the kart. Same with the Palmini tank (no such thing as finding a Rathmann tank!!) which is on ebay now. It can go back on the shelf, until I come up with another Rathmann, I guess!!

Dwain:

Do you have a pic of this mount? I'm new at this and have no idea what you all are refering to other than an engine mount and therefore don't understand what's so special about it. I'll switch over to ebay and look there too.

Have a good day,

Sterling

Sterling, there's nothing really special about the Hands/Trophy mount. They were smooth finished and looked good on the kart. They are essential for a proper resto on karts like Bug products, Xterminators and others. They were a 45 degree mount, so the inside bottom engine bolt is a beast to reach for tightening. Just a good mount for 1960's karts. TJ

Hands 45 degree mounts aren't really essential for an Xterminator. The most famous Xterminator of them all used 30 degree mounts.

Tom, Bobby's kart was a very early Xterminator. I saw it in person at Nassau, and in Florida several times. Almost all the later karts with Macs came with Hands mounts. I saw and raced against plenty of them in Central Florida in '61. Charlie Craibe and I went to Miami in late '60 to see them at Rathmann's showroom. At that time most of the ones there did have 30 degree steel mounts, but that was VERY early in the production run. Our shop did engine modifications on a number of Rathmann karts. I remember one with a C.W. Johnson's Garage (my Pop) modified Mc20 with a stuck throttle running amuck, throwing the young driver off and spinning donuts in the dirt outside our track. Someone finally managed to catch it and stop it after several minutes. Funny as heck! It's been over fifty years, and I can't remember if Bobby's kart had steel mounts, but it most likely did. Most of Ron Cubel's restos have Hands mounts. TJ

I still have some steel mounts exactly like the ones on Allen's kart. Pete Berlt, Allen's teammate at Nassau sent me all his (Pete's) old kart stuff a long time ago. They are not very nice mounts but there are what they are. FMS made a cast aluminum 30 degree McCulloch mount also. Point was that Hands mounts are just one choice and are not an essential item on an Xterminator even if all of Cubel's Xterminators have them. My buddies un-restored Xterminator has a pair of Mc-70s with steel mounts.
I've got the original photos somewhere that Pete sent me of the Xterminators racing at Sebring, Jeff Crumb, Bobby Allen, and Pete are in them.

The only reason we didn't run there that year was that Mom and Pop didn't have enough money to ship my B Super GoKart. I went alone, and enjoyed the whole thing-even the quarter midgets. We went to Sebring, but didn't take the karts. Fun days. TJ
