I wonder how they ever came up with the raised square lips on the top intake transfer ports on the 90 series and above? What was their thinking?

Bill,
I would lay odds that the extra material you are referring to was not added to alter the performance of the engine. I'm betting they created that shape to provide a flat landing for the cutting tool that was perpendicular to the axis of the tool. Even with a cutter the size of the transfer ports it is hard to control when the tool hits on a curved surface and the tool will chatter or wander. It would be interesting to hear from someone who worked there on that subject.
