The consensus of opinion is that ONLY McCulloch engines should be used on an R-1. HOWEVER, how much of a renegade are you? If you want to raise a ruckus, slap a WB 820 (or TWO) on your kart! :o

Is there a problem with using the West Bend engine?

Debbi-

It's not a problem, it's just like dropping a Ford engine in a Chevy car. It's the one of only a couple instances where a kart engine manufacturer also tried their hand at making a kart. With almost any other kart, putting any kind of vintage kart power plant isn't even thought twice about. But just the fact that Mac built the karts and the motors, there is almost a feeling that the McCulloch gods intended their McCulloch motors to go on their karts. Plus you'll find a lot of McCulloch fans LOVE their Macs with an almost religious zeal! But it by no means is unheard of- Vince Hughes has a West Bend 580 on his McCulloch kart and it think it's partially to get a rise out of the McCulloch faithful!
