I'm going to put DXL clutches on a pair of Mac 101M/Cs. Should I use 3rd bearing supports outboard of the clutches?

DXL's will snap cranks. Don't know about third brg's saving a crank but it may keep you from getting hit or hitting someone else with a loose clutch......doing lots of damage.
DXL'S ARE NOT REAR LEGAL !

Rob,
Thanks for the input. I already have the clutches - left over from another project. I know the DXLs are not REAR legal. I also know that lots of these clutches show up at vintage events anyway. I will replace them with legit equipment as budget permits. For now I guess I'll add a 3rd bearing.

Pile a lot of weight into it.
Do you have the special 'Z' weights that were originally made for the DXL?
If not, buy some.
The 101 builds way more torque down low than any italian or japanese engine.
You want the clutch to lock up, and go,
not slip 75 feet down the strait.

Phil,
As for the other vintage events, I can't say that I have seen a DXL on a rear engine kart. If you are running dual MC101's and a somewhat hard tire, the dry clutches will pull pretty darn good. I have always run dry horstman clutches on my dual MC101 Chaparral and hard SuperSlick tires. I have to ease into the gas pedal exiting some turns to keep the power slide under control, no bogging on those motors.
The DXL is a very heavy clutch, and therefore a 3rd bearing support is a good safety idea. If you use a more vintage correct clutch, like a dry horstman, or an oil shoe clutch (Burco, Horstman Slipster, etc....) they are somewhat light clutches and cranks usually don't break too often with them; back in the day, 3rd bearing supports were not used on these clutches.
Just don't show up at The Big One with a DXL clutch, you will never get the kart onto the track, the promotors are strick to the rules.
