Custom Aluminum Kart Trailer for My Kit Car

Post by Jeff Troy » Thu May 22, 2008 5:26 pm

Hi, Buds,

I'm the original owner/builder of the custom Bradley GT in these photos. I built it in 1976, and have driven more than 620-thousand miles over the last 32 years. It's been all over the country dozens of times, and still makes long-distance trips regularly. This is its sixth paint job, and it's DuPont Royal Plum ChromaLusion with pearl ghost flames and ChromaLusion mist. Lots of Jet-Hot, polished aluminum and polished stainless, and the engine is a very mild 1641 air-cooled Volkswagen with air conditioning.

Randal fabricated the custom stainless hitch, and welded the frame for this lightweight aluminum T-trailer. I haven't polished the stainles hitch yet, but all the fasteners and fittings are highly polished stainless. The trailer has a nice semi-gloss polish, too.

The kart is my 1960 Go Kart 800 with a stock MC-6. It's period correct, and is raced in 100cc vintage most weekends in Oreville PA. The original Posi-Stop disk brake has a slight internal modification -- and works amazingly well.

Anyway, here's the car, kart, hitch and trailer.

Jeff your open trailer reminds me of an old argument. After everyone went Hollywood and got an enclosed trailer karts stopped sticking out the trunks of cars or a small open trailer's where they generated lots of interest when at a gas station or going down the road. like all thing just another reason karting is having a hard time growing.

But most any weekend I see dirt bikes & 4 wheelers in the back of a small open pickup's.

Like years ago in the show car circuit when top rods and custom's went to enclosed trailers and the hew and cry was only " Horse's assss's " get to ride in enclosed trailers .....

Just letting it all out for all to see is great and may just be the answer to attracting a bit more interest.

Mc Bob.

HI, Buds,

Rob - I'll never forget how pissed my dad was when my original Homelite Spitfire/AH-58 leaked gas out of the floor tank and all over the trunk of his new Eldorado when he drove me to Cuddebackville from Middletown (NY) in 1962.

Only problem with the open trailer is that it only carries one kart, which makes it a no-go for Fremont, where I'd rather bring a field of rides for me and Devin. BTW, Randal's design is similar to the single-kart trailer he fabricated for his Harley, which many of you may have seen.

McBob - Any car in a trailer is a poser. My GT has been a winner at many shows before the road nicks became too numerous, but I have never gone to any show - no matter how far - in anything but in my GT's driver seat. The pics in the links are from last weekend's Carlisle Kit & Import Show in PA. Okay, so it's only an hour away, but after 650 thousand miles, I don't need to explain that the car is actually driven - everywhere. Matter of fact, I think Voska has seen it at Fremont during one of my Midwestern trips a few years ago.

Warmest regards,
Jeff Troy
