THE BIG ONE #1

I just found my original letter I sent to “R.E.A.R” after “THE BIG ONE #1”. It brought back great old memories so thought I would re-post it.

'The Big One' - 'The BEST ONE'

'The Big One'…
…This 'Event' will be remembered as 'The BEST ONE'

As I drove into the track, I thought I was driving back in time. The track is set in a wooded area that reminded me of a picnic grove I used to go to as a kid back in the 50's and early 60's. Talking to some of the old karters, they said that the track reminded them of the tracks they went to as kids. This vintage track was the perfect place for a vintage 'event'.

This 'event' is going to be a hard one to top. We had unlimited track time. You could have been out on the track steady for two days, but alas my old body wouldn't let be run that much. Though the kids (our up-and-coming vintage karters), ran steady all weekend without the slightest look of wear and tear and were a blast to watch. Rob even put together a special kart for Murph Junior. The trophies that were given to all the kids from, I think, Aurora and her husband _?_ was the icing on the cake. My hat's off to them. Lunch was also provided FREE for both days. And there was also an unlimited supply of FREE ice-cold bottled water and pop all weekend long. Oh, don't let me forget to mention the FREE raffle both days. What can I say, when Rob and Bob through a bash it is hard to top!

This event brought vintage karters out of the woodwork. I met some new people that I only talked to on-line and I was not even sure if they were really real. (Now there is no longer a W.W. award. We'll have to give Virg something else.) I got to meet and talk with some of the pioneers of karting. And it is always nice seeing the regulars (friends that I have met in the last year or so since I have been involved in vintage karting).
Rob and Bob, I would like to thank you. All the work that you put into this 'Event' was appreciated by all. I will do the 9-hour trip and come back out there anytime I am invited.

Call it “The Big One”,
Call it “R.E.A.R.”
I call it “THE BEST ONE”

Thanks again,
Rick Lanyi

If we were smarter back then....... :D

Rick it's always been the people, friends made and the karts that made the event special. Over the years an amazing amount of people have passed through. The memories I have can't be replaced. The energy, time, dedication people have put into finding, restoring these karts from the early days is truly special and a testament to their love for these little things.

I still remember the first time we met at Batavia. A bunch of then middle age guys chatting like a 12 year old girls at a slumber party. Seeing stuff that is common in one area but never seen in another area..... or only in the magazines.

A little older, a little grayer but never wavering is the enjoyment of these little things they call "Go-Karts".

You & Black Bart are always welcome!
