Hey guys,
I have recently broke the recoil starter on my mc49, and it no longer recoils. i tried taking it apart but the furthest i got was the front cover, as i did not want to risk breaking anything. Is there any trick to opening these up to check the spring/fix?
Thanks,

Use belts so I had to get out the manual. Probably stuff at the racing chain saw sites also.
To disassemble the recoil started, unbolt from engine.
Hold handle and outer cover that has 2 bolts.
Allow pully to rotate slowly to get tension off of spring.
Remove ratchet then carefully pull rope pully from housing.
recoil spring should stay in the starter base.
Replace rope and spring. Preload recoil spring 2 turns and reassemble.
Inspect paws on flywheel and replace as needed.
The paws fly out from the center when engine is running. Make sure they are free.
