I just don't get it.

I don't quite get why you would have a facebook page and make it private. The idea of any type of web or facebook 'page' is to share information with others isn't it ?

Why would you want to restrict people from seeing rules, schedules, agenda, etc ?

A friend uses facebook market place and says there scammers using it just like they do on Craigslist with all fake info and postings to obtain your information via the myriads of apps people are using that give away their data.
So when you see a $1400 Banshee for sale, do not respond. If its too good to be true, it probably is.

Selling may be different then sharing however going back to the original question, why would you want to restrict people from seeing rules, schedules, agenda, etc ?

I cannot imagine that there would be that much spam that you simply could not just delete it . Everyone I know who has a web page goes to their page at least 3 times a day just to keep tabs on any of the activity. I can't see Facebook being any different unless I am missing something.

Good question?

Before the information and truth "Specialists" at F-book swept in, I recall karting enthusiasts using the club forums and reading club newsletters. You know. the forum and newsletters our club dues were needed so urgently to support?

The average karter used to be able to view the clubs public F-book page without having to join that F#!%k- book nightmare.
Not anymore for a while now?
If you get an answer let us know what it is.

A few of us still appreciate the time and money spent by the 3 independent karting forums and will continue to use those.

I dabble in roadracing and the main form of discussion, race dates, information, etc. in the USA is on a facebook page that is public. There are alot other facebook pages that are not private also. The excuse that there is too much spam on facebook is just not believable.

This is a little bit late, but since I'm one of the moderators of the VKCA Facebook page, I'll chime in. In their infinite wisdom, Facbook decided to remove moderator controls on all groups that were public.

Meaning anyone could join the group without there being anyway to vet them. We've always had a simple two question questionnaire (What is your interest in Vintage Karting?" and "Do You Agree to Abide by the Group Rules?") that would get kicked to us when someone wanted to join the group and then we would approve them. That goes away when the group is public. All we can do is delete posts. We can't even block users.

In a message board world, it is its own universe. On Facebook your group is just part of the Facebook universe, so you get scammers and trolls and people who are looking to mine data from any corner of the Facebook universe by the 100s, because you can click on any group members name and see their profile and have access to their friends list and any other personal information they put on their profile. That's why on Facebook you'll see people posting messages that say "Ignore any friend requests from me, I've been hacked." That doesn't happen in this message board world.

So yes, technically I could log on every 15 minutes to delete the porn, penis growth pill ads, political rants, Sunglasses business ads, etc. etc. etc. But I'd also like to have a life. The only way for moderators to go back to being gatekeepers is to make the group private. One of the Midwest Vintage Karting groups left their profile public and was actually hijacked with the admin permissions changed so the originators couldn't log in to change anything, then whoever did the hijacking just posted a bunch of gay porn on the group page.

So yeah, it's a total pain in the ass to police all that stuff. Not to bag on message boards, but the traffic here is a trickle compared to the traffic on the Facebook groups - We average 11 new posts a day, and that's not counting the comments made on the posts. Of the 4,647 people who are members of the group, 2,935 are considered "active." I'm busy enough dealing with knuckleheads within the 4,647 with it being private. They don't pay me enough (as in zero) to also deal with a slew of nefarious pricks if we kept the group public. But yeah, you can thank the smart people in the Facebook management offices for taking moderation powers away at the front door for public groups.

Carry on.

Great to see you Dean!

We seem to go in streaks where we get spammed. Then not for a while.

You know the saying if it's 'FREE" that means your the product they are selling. Even looked up something for a friend? I had a guy do some painting for me & for pay he wanted some motorcycle tires. So I look up motorcycle tires he wanted. Then for months I get motorcycle tire ad's. Funny because I had already bought them and had zero plans of buying any more. So someone sold my info to many companies then they payed for me to see the advertisement. Lots of money changing hands even at $0.01 each.

Right after I make a purchase online, I start receiving ads for the exact same thing.........as if I want to buy another one. Go figure.

Likewise! Always good to see your name!

I'm not a huge fan of the 21st century. I enjoyed the days when I bought something and that was the end of it. If I'm not getting a bunch of ads in my inbox that I then have to go through the hoops of "unsubscribing" from a mailing list I never signed up for in the first place, I'm being asked to write a g*ddamn online review for anything I've bought, even if it's a roll of lifesavers. Or I'm being bugged to take a survey about something for the chance to "win" a $50 gift card. No thanks. My time is worth more than that. It is weird that personal information is the currency nowadays.

I spent the first half of the 1990's working at a Mom n' Pop auto parts store that specialized in British/European cars and had a garage attached. The owner was Yugolovian guy named Paul who was kind of a cranky dude, but he had a number of priceless sayings that I still use. We'd get cheepskate customers who just because they found a used up Mercedes 240D that they paid $1500 for, they thought they should be able to pay Slant 6 prices for parts or service. So they'd try to ask Paul for a "freebie" for being such a" good customer." Paul would look them in the eye and with a heavy accent would say "The only thing free in life is sunshine."

At some point I will extract myself from Facebook. There is a lot of BS, but I tend to view and use the internet on the whole as a big research library, and there are some very useful groups there. Particularly in my other dumb interests. I've found parts and technical answers for my old woodrail pinball machines, and just this last week I was able to get the missing shelf for my 1950 GE refrigerator from a person in the Vintage Appliance group.

Be well!
