Gasket goo

Happy weekend. I have a magnesium case with a slightly beat up manifold gasket surface. Does anyone know of a silicone (or other thick agent) gasket sealer that will stand up to methanol? I need to be able to remove the manifold in the event that the rod needs to come out

I swear by Hylomar. A bit pricey, but worth it.

Check Loctites website or...
Get yourself some Yamabond. I think its hylomar but not sure but it is good stuff.
Local Yamaha Dealer should have it.

You can also take a light cut off of it so you have a good surface. Also had luck with the copper spray and it comes off easy.

Thanks, guys. Rob, next time the engine comes apart I will have the surface milled. It's a VERY nasty engine to reassemble
, so I don't want to take it apart until it needs real attention. I generally use K&W Coppercoat spray, but in this case, I think a thicker sealer will do the trick best. I will check the auto parts places for the Hylomar, and failing that, I will run up to Albuquerque to the Yammie dealer. Thanks again to all! Ted

Hi Ted-
You can get hylomar from Harbor Freight for $4.95 a tube (usually $14-$21). Dean turned me on to the stuff and it is an outstanding gasket dressing.

No recommendation on the foreign stuff at all. Thats why we gave the Loctite info, if we had our choice we would go American.

Guys, guys! I agree-American ONLY-and ordered a tube from Harbor Freight - Thanks, Dan! It'll take longer thah the shipping time to get the manifold machined, anyhow. I took a second look at the gasket surface, and probably could have gone with the Copper Coat, but a little leak insurance won't come amiss!.....Just thought, if we use new Tilly carbs, the "American only" goes out the window; Irish, you know...
