Re-assembly Issue

Looking for a fellow Bug Sprint kart owner (mine's a 1967) to correspond with, or better yet talk to, about a re-assembly issue I'm having related to the alignment of the axle and clutch sprockets. I'm on the home stretch of my restoration. Thanks!

Alan,

Give a good explanation of what issues you are experiencing along with some photos and I'm sure we can help you get things in alignment.

I'm posting pictures of both sides of the rear of my kart, showing how the axle is mounted, brake and engine side. You can see on the engine side that the sprockets on the engine and the axle are out of alignment by at least an inch, and maybe more. I'm sure this is probably a re-assembly error on my part, but any reference I once had is long gone. Any help would be much appreciated.

Alan,

Running a inboard clutch can get tricky for the very issues you are experiencing.

Was this set-up on the kart or is this something you are trying to do ? If it was already on the kart you only have a orientation issue.

Can you move the axle bearings at the mount to the other side of the mounts flanges as in bolting the bearings on the left side of the mount flanges instead of the right side as you have [determine right and left as viewed from the back of the kart]. This will give you more clearance between the sprocket carrier and the axle bearing.

Getting a outboard clutch or building a mount subplate to move the engine over are also options.

The inboard wet clutch was on the kart when I purchased it, pre-restoration. I'll take a look at the possibility of moving the bearings to the other side of the mount flanges and report back.

Alan, like Bob says, turn the flangette and bearing to the inside of the engine mount leg. Also, I admit I haven't used an Azusa sprocket hub for over fifty years, but most hubs will let you turn the sprocket bolts around so you can bolt the sprocket on the inside face of the hub. This'll gain a bit extra. I realize turning the bearing around means taking out the axle, but it may be the only way to move the sprocket over enough. Ted

Thanks guys, was hoping against hope not to have to pull the axle out again, but if that's what it takes, so be it.

Alan,

Can the mount be unbolted from the frame and bearings with the axle still in the kart at least on the brake side ?

Lesson to be learned from Alan's misfortune is to take pictures of your kart before you restore it. Not only will you have a view of the assembly orintation but you will also have 'before and after' documentation.

With the age of digital photograohy and camera phones taking photos is easy and it may save a lot of extra work in the long run.
