repops Power Products mount fits AH58 and AH61 std+ super?

Post by david a luciani » Fri Mar 21, 2008 1:21 pm

hi guys,
i've listed a motor mount on ebay Item number: 270221361083 that has shown some interest.
"Dave, this is a Power Products mount, fits AH58 and AH61 std and super series, may also fit the AH81/82 series. Louie"

i was wondering if people would buy a sand cast aluminum repop of this for about sixty dollars?
if so i'll pull the part from the auction so i can make a casting model (it has to be a little bigger to be the same dimensionally) and relist it later .
i'll need to know soon as there's no bids yet.
to make it worth doing i'd need about five people to express interest.
since that many people bookmarked it i suspect i know the answer.
anyway let me know soon.
thanx for your time dave

Just make sure you get them properly heat treated or you will be dragging your nice AH82 along by the fuel hose and throttle cable

david, our group here in louisville would easily buy ten in that price range. heck i could use four of them right now. also you could sell some that aren't drilled for use on other type engines! keep us posted, thanks mike branham (derby city karts)

i'm assuming that you mean to de-stress the metal casting.
i have no problem doing that.
at what temp would you suggest they be heat treated and how long should they soak at temp?
thanx dave

Dave, I did a google search on "heat treating cast aluminum", they give some numbers there that you are looking for. TL

356T virgin aluminum would be a good choice. Heat treat to T4 or higher.
I know some kids who cast items like these from recycled German forged aluminum automobile wheels. BBS, Mercedes, Audi, and Porsche etc. and they tell me it's better aluminum than they can buy and they get it for free from all the idiots who wreck their fine automobiles.

Firstly, it's not my intent to make junk parts that'll wreck rare motors.
Thank you everyone for your input.
This all started because i was a model maker in the past and possess the necessary skills to make the casting model.
I finally got the shrinkage rate of aluminum and the plans i needed to construct a casting melt furnace.

I have a few thoughts please don't be offended as that is not my intent.
If there's something I state that is wrong headed please correct me as nicely as you'd like to be corrected.

Observations of part:
The only machining of this part is for the drilled holes and the base seems sanded.
On all the cast motor mounts for karts i have that there is minimal machining.
I believe the fellows back then doing the casting did this deliberately.
when you machine a part you change the molecular balance of same and need to destress it.
on this reflection, maybe complicated heat treating might not even have been used back then.
It's even possible that the parts weren't heat treated more than a de-stressing soak if that.
My problem is i don't know and can't find that piece of info.

Request:
If any of you know the heat treating specs AS FACT not speculation of what was done with these parts in the day i really need your input.
Also any of the guys currently casting motor mounts i'd love to hear from you as you're actually doing it.
Especially temps and soak times

You all probably know if i go to a shop that does heat treating the cost will skyrocket and get out of control.
I have several annealing/casting kilns that are probably up to the job of extended heat treat soaks.
the problem i have is that any specs i can find are for specific alloys(read very expensive in giant lots).
my thoughts would be that using junked cast auto rims for the alloy make a very strong alloy for this part.(also low cost)
so any help would be great as cost is always a factor.
aaand if the costs go up i may indeed have to change the price structure which will probably kill this project.
thanx dave
