Clinton E-65 engine mounts

Post by Dennis Turk » Thu Feb 28, 2008 12:53 pm

Hi All

Recently I acquired an original though well used E-65 Clinton cart engine. The engine was complete including the original factory mount. As I own a manufacturing facility here in Oregon I am going to make up a number of reproductions of the original mount. I am converting two D-35 chain saws into the E-65's and a pair of D-65's into a pair of E-60 cart engines. By having both the cart engine and the saw engines I have come to understand what Clinton used from the chain saw motors at least on the one E-65 I have.

My question is is there any interest in any of you wonting one or more of these mounts? Just trying to get a feel as to how many I build. Just for starters I have commitments for 12 of them so I am thinking a run of 25 or 50 depending on what we hear back from you guys and also a couple of other places. We may also offer some up on eBay to see if there is any interest there.

Thanks for any feed back guys.

Me again

I forgot to mention that these mounts because of there bolt patter were the engine bolts on can be used on the right or left side and will also mount the A-400 and 490 cart engines.

Is it possible to post a picture of the original mount? I am in the process of restoring another Simplex and this one will have a A-400; so I certainly may be interested, but I believe the A-400 has a type of mount that would hopefully bolt up to my Simplex frame mount.
Thanks,
Mark

Here is a picture of the original mount stripped of paint and bead blasted.

Here is a picture of this mount with a pair of E-65's on a Simplex. The A-400 would mount the same way as the chain saw motors. This would alow you to not have to use the A-400 or 490 gas tank. I think it would look cool.

Dennis,

Sign me up!! That is the EXACT Kart that I am restoring. I have another one already done just like that (in Black) with dual West Bend 580's. I really like that style: the SIMPLEX Mark IIII. That would be fine so I could use the seat back tank and not the one on the A-400. Now,what about the existing base mount that is bolted on the bottom of the A-400? Should I remove it ?

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark

Yes remove the original base as there is only three bolts holding the base on to the cylinder block. Now do replace one or two of the bolts with shorter ones with some sealer on it as I think there is two that are open into the inside of the crank case.

These D-35 55 and 65 chain saws can be found for little money. I have four of them and the cheapest one was $10.50 and the most expensive one I got was $55. The 55 and 65 have the steel rods same three rings that the E-65 ran but the piston is different. The chain saw motors have a higher compression than the cart engines did. Here are some pictures I took of a new +20 wisco E-65 piston and the chain saw piston. I did not have a new E-65 but they look very similar to the Wisco. I was looking at some chain saw specifications and found the D-65 chain saw is rated right at one HP more than the E-65 cart engine is.
