... this makes me think, how many different small flatbacks are there? not just p/n's, but more so, outside appearance? I know the Mc20 carb was unique, as it had the chrome plated flat back plate, and the groove at the air inlet entry (for draining fuel in chainsaw applications). I know later flatbacks used on macs did not have that groove, what else was different?

Re: Carburetor choice for MC-6
Didn't the first version of the flatback have a magnesium body?

Re: Carburetor choice for MC-6
Flat backs were standard on ;
Mc-2. Late Mc-6, Mc-7. Mc-8, Mc-9, Mc-20, Mc-30, Mc-40, Mc-45, Mc-45D, certain Mc-49s, Mc-70, Mc-75, and Mc-100. Some had ball checks and others had needles. Like Jeff pointed out aome were chrome. I've got some that came on painted motors that are chrome under the yellow paint. The Mc-49 flat back is different than any of the other flatbacks I've seen.
Now I like the photo on the cover of the later Mcculloch Owners handbooks which shows a pair of Super Macs with dual Tillotsons on them!
Karters tagged the name flatback to the aluminum carbs so as to not confuse them with the Mc-10 carb which was the magnesium Mcculloch carb. The back cover on it has some ribs and isn't flat.

I think the Mc-90 also had a flat back on a Reed intake manifold.

Re: Carburetor choice for MC-6
Thanks for all the replies!
As mentioned in an earlier reply, the February 1961 cover of Karting World does show the MC-6 with tillotsons. Since the early MC-6 came with a Tillotson, my current plan is to use one Tillotson HL 320 on each engine.
I think that will produce a fairly correct and tractable combination.
