V-4 Reed Thickness

Post by Dennis Detweiler » Fri Jan 25, 2008 3:44 pm

The reed on one side of my V-4 has a thickness of .0235. The other side is .0285. A previous post recommended using reed sheets of .015 to cut your own. What is factory thickness? Which way to go? Thanks.

Dennis,

The original Mac reeds are .024 as I recall. The best ones were a dark reddish brown and had a very fine pattern to the material. You can get the good ones from Vince Hughes. The thick ones were junk and killed the HP. I have never tried making them out of thinner material and I would be concerned about them breaking but modern materials may be much more durable than the stuff used 30+ years back so they may work just fine.
