Hi- I was priming a new kart cylinder and noticed that the exhaust ports were noticeably lower down in the bore than those in a chain saw and white cylinder. .08 to be exact. Was this kart cylinder made for an AH 61, or did the AH 58 and 61 share the same one?
I wound up with three white cylinders, and had to open up the outer exhaust ports to 9/16, keeping the tops even with the center port's top, plus adding in the eight head screw holes. I heard that 40 of these, brand new, showed up several years ago. Does anyone know what they were originally made for?

Youre right, Brian. I just found out these came off Navy surplus engines for small generators. Hank found the port timing identical to the regular cylinders.
But my other question must have been missed by the gurus. Why are this kart cylinder's ports nearly 3/32" further down the barrel than the ports in the saw cylinders, white cylinder, and other kart jugs? Could it be for an AH 61 with its longer piston travel?

Those white motors were on ebay for a short while quite a few years ago. There were about 35 available. I wanted to buy all of them, but shipping from California to Texas killed the sale. Are you sure the ports are lower and not the base of cylinder cut down? Just a little curious.
Its possible some early saw motors had different port heights.
For the 61's you added a 1/16 shim with thin paper gaskets on either side to raise them.

Terry- Those lower ports were in a new kart cylinder, with the big outer exhaust ports and the pipe plugs. The white cylinder looks to be identical to the chain saw cylinders that are in my shop. I like the ports higher up for high RPM and less chance of free porting that the snowblower pistons I use are at risk of, even with the thick cylinder base gasket.

What snow blower pistons are you using? From the Tecumseh 3hp motors with one piece block?

I am running the "white jugs " on our Simplex . I used the rods and thick ring pistons that came in the white motors . The piston to head clearance is a bit much but, running duals on a stub axle kart you really don't need a ton of power .

I did cut the exhaust ports to look like the stock kart jug ports .

Brian, did you measure the height of the exhaust port to the top of the cylinder and also to the bottom of the cylinder (gasket surface)? Tecumseh painted the AH 58's white for Rupp.

No I did not measure them . I just had the white jug exhaust ports cut to match the kart jug ports.
