Eric-

This isn't anything new with this guy. He's done the same thing with 4 or 5 other karts in the last couple of years. To my knowledge none of them have sold at his "you must be smokin' crack" prices, so I am just guessing that the guy just does it for attention... I'm sure he's trolling the boards to see if there are any posts about his auction.

Well thats a relief....I've got it in my head I "NEED" an exterminater. I knew they they had value, but when I saw that price the other day I thought my dreams of Rathmann Glory were CRUSHED!! That and the fact that at that price I could get..........oh lets say........somthing like a used 911. A nice one at that. In all seriousness ,Hypotheticly speaking...
what would a kart like that (Not on Ebay) gentalman to gentalman bring?

I know a pretty clean and sympathetically rebuilt runner (i.e. very presentable and clean, but not really at show standards) complete with early macs and ready to drive that sold for somewhere in the neighborhood of $5-6K. I've seen pretty complete decent projects in the $1500-$2K range.

A far cry from $25K!

Hi Erik-
A "little high" is what Preduction is when he writes his ads, but that is ok because he brings so much laughter into the world.
Preduction bought a really sweet $5,000 kart only to list it on E-Bay for $45,000. Then, he's turned around and bought a Homelite K-92 motor for $800 then listed it within a week for $4,500. It is sad to see someone try to do the old pump and dump (artificially inflate the price, and then sell) or try to corner the market for certain karts, but this is a free market governed by the laws of supply and demand. Luckily, supply has kept up with demand for all but the rarest karts (Rathman's, Caretta's, New Breed's etc.) and a good kart can be had for a reasonable price.
To our credit, we have a tight community that tries to take care of its own. My fear is that a newcomer or an outside entity will end up paying some exorbitant price and then try to peg the prices of other karts unreasonably high. As we've seen lately--with the softening of kart prices-- the market for these karts is VERY small and very saturated (most folks own more than one kart) karts do not have the broader mass appeal that would warrant astronomical sums of money. Vintage karts are money pits :) not the gold mines some think they are. If you can break even on the cost to restore a kart, most count themselves lucky. For nearly everyone who is involved, it is a love of karts and the comradery we find that is important, it is not about money.
Maybe its just me, but you would think for 25k you could get the uber-rare seat back tank and some upholstery.....

Forget Rathmanns and Carettas, for 15 million US dollars you might be able to purchase a Mercedes Benz W-163 Grand Prix race car. This things make Rathmann and Caretta karts, Indy Cars, NASCAR stock cars etc. look like the Cub Scouts built them.

Hey Tom-
Several pesky problems, my lack of 15 million (probably the biggest with spare parts coming in a close second), a climate controlled garage to store it in, one hell of an alarm system and a bang up insurance policy. Sheesh, the insurance policy monthly premium is probably more that most people's mortgage.... That said, if you can afford the car you probably don't care.
What a beautiful piece of engineering, those brake drums are more works of art than racing equipment.
Hard to believe something so beautiful could make 480bhp :o

Hey, Tom... I wonder how much Theo would ask for the W-163 on eBay...? TJ

You know, everytime I see that guys Kart adds, it's make me feel good. By comparison, I'm now rich if his prices are any indication of value, and vintage karts are the best investment I ever made.

This guy is doing us all a favor, we should thank him. The next time your wife freaks over you spending $2500 for a vintage kart, just show her one or Preduction's eBay auctions and tell her what a good deal you got on your "investment"! :D
