Hey guys im new here and I have a kart that my dad and I redid when I was younger now I am not sure what kind of kart it is and was hoping this weekend to put up some pictures of it to see what you guys think it is. Now with that being said when my father and I redid our kart we just put a 5.5 hp briggs on it but before it had a 3.5 hp tecumseh engine on it. In your guy's opinion what are the favorite engines for vintage karts and what is a good engine for someone just starting into the hobby? I realize everyone may have a different opinion on these questions but thats fine with me i just would like to know.
Thanks
Seth

Seth, this is primarily a site dedicated to early RACING karts. Generally, there is little interest here in 4 cycle engines, as they weren't used in racing until the seventies. An appropriate 2 cycle engine depends upon the brand, year and model of the kart you have. It would help to give us photos of your kart. For someone who has little experience, a Clinton A-400, A-490 or E-65 engine might be a good choice. The West Bend 580 is a good choice for a bit more power. All these engines come up for sale on ebay from time to time. Parts may be more easily had for the West Bend. If your kart has dual engine mounts, a second engine may be added after you have gotten some time with your single engine. All of the above engines are easy to maintain or rebuild. The McCulloch engines are much faster, but are more "fussy", and less reliable for a beginner. Hope this helps some. Ted
