Crank Seals?

Post by vince hughes » Fri Feb 10, 2012 5:22 pm

Whats the on-line supplier that somebody had on here a year or two ago? My local shop sold out, and seals doubled.

You can get Chicago Rawhide at your local NAPA.

Tip of the Month

This month’s tip is for you guys doing your own rebuilds. I get asked all the time where can I get seals for my engine. If you don’t want to use seals that have been sitting around in the bottom of a box for 30-40 years here’s where I have been getting mine. If what you need is not listed here if you take a crank and block with you they can measure what you need and set you up. I have used these seals for both Gas and Alky without any problems.

I get my seals at NAPA! Now how easy is that? They carry Chicago Rawhide seals and can get them in a day. This is the number on the box and if what you need here is not listed this will get up into the right family of seals. It’s a lot easier than telling some parts guy that you need a seal for 12,000 RPM with Alky fuel. It saves both you and him a lot of head scratching.

#9243 ¾” PTO seals for both 100 and 125cc Mac’s.

#6816 is the PTO seal for 92,93 & 101 engines.

#7421 is the 101 dust shield.

#7414 is the seal for the inner 101 and both sides of a 91 series engine.

Rob,

The seal for the PTO side of the 5,6,7,8,9,90 and all 49 and 91 series engines is not the same as the seal for the flywheel side as indicated in your post.
Do you have a part # for the PTO side seal for those models?

I don't have a standard engine here to tell which seal goes where, but the two SKF numbers are 7414 and 6763. Ted

Hi Steve
Don't mean to mislead anyone. That is what I have been using with no problems. I took some old brand new never opened packs of Pit Parts seals to NAPA a long time ago to match them up & the seals Pit Parts sold were both the same. What is different? I'm interested in knowing.
Thanks
Rob

Vince,
The last time I bought SKF seals I used KSC Direct. It's the online division of Kelley Supply. They listed all the MAC engine and Margay gearbox seals I needed and their pricing was good, under $5 for engine seals. It took about a week because they didn't have all the seals in stock but they got them.

There maybe a better deal out there but you can check them out.

kscdirect.com

Enter the seal number (SKF 6763) in the search box then click on the part number for price and dimensions.

Hope your well brother!

Rob,
Your post included the following... >>#7414 is the seal for the inner 101 and both sides of a 91 series engine.<<

The bore of the seal bosses are way different from one side to the other on all the 91 series and earlier non super series engines like the 5,6,7,8,9. The OD of the flywheel side seal is 1.190" and the OD of the PTO side seal is 1.128" so I don't think you could have used the same seal on both sides of a 91 series motor. The ID dimensions are not close either... the flywheel side seal in NOS condition will have an ID of around .645" to fit on the journal that is .667". On the PTO side the journal is .750 and the ID of a new seal is around .715"
In fact, there are no Mac kart engines I can think of that use the same seal on both sides. They all use the same seal OD/ID combination on the flywheel side as described above but there are two versions of the flywheel side seal, the thick version used in all non super series models is .235" thick and the super series models use a thinner version that is .185" thick and then they have the dust seal outboard of the main seal and it has the same ID/OD dimensions and is only .120 thick and has no spring inside.
On the PTO side of the 91 type engines there are different styles floating around but the most common is a Japanese made NOK brand part number 110885. The most common flywheel side is the NOK part number 57898 for the thin version and part number 89335 for the thick version.
Then there is the PTO seal for the 101 series engines that is 1.377" on the OD and has the same ID as the flywheel side at .650" which should not be confused with the PTO seal for the 20/30/40/45/70/75/100 models that have a PTO crank journal of something like .786" so they need a seal with the same OD as the 101 but a bigger ID... around .750" I don't have any part numbers for the big PTO seals to share.
Regards,
Steve
