Flywheel With Zero Magnetism

I just came in from the shop where I pulled apart a PP that didn't have spark. The magnets in the flywheel have zero magnetism. What would cause this? In 40+ years I don't think I've ever seen this before. I've had some that were weak but not totally dead. It doesn't seem like it would be old age as other engines of like age or older work fine. Any ideas? Darv.

I used to have this problem back when I was goofing around with Lambrettas. Fortunately there were a few old motorcycle shops in town that had the equipment to re-magnetize the flywheels.

Not sure what you'd do in this case other than save it and try to find either another flywheel or an old-timey shop that either specializes in old two strokes or rebuilds old car generators- they'll have the machine to re-magnetize it.

On a more serious note...I've wondered if when
storing a motor for a long period of time if it's any benefit to have the
flywheel floating and NOT anywhere near the magneto, hence no magnetic
transfer. This might imply flywheel magnets do have a lifespan, but I'm
not sure they do. Any thoughts guys?

I have a re-magnitizer.
Used it all the time on my son's US820 when he was runing Jr. Sportsman.
One of the little tricks it took to out-run those damn 80cc Daps that were allowed in the class.
We were not allowed to modify anything to get more ignition advance, so I run a really large point gap, and as long as there was a fresh Zap on the flywheel magnets, it run good!
So good that all the Dap builders was sure I was cheating......
Got torn down a lot back in those days.

The Magnetizer I use has a large bank of capacitors that then feed through a large relay. The core is wrapped with very large gauge wire.
It will give one very strong pulse when the relay is triggered.
It is so strong, that I have to shut down all the computers in the house before I use it. Screws with all the TV sets in my neighborhood )

I used to custom build them for the pro slot car & RC car guys, back 15 years ago. The one I have now was my very first prototype.
