Powdercoating a Chilton Tank?

The chrome is flaking all off of our chilton 5 qt tank and I'm considering having it powdercoated. Concerns are about the seams......are they soldered? Powdercoat process requires 20 minute cure time at 400°F.....wonder if it would hold up?
Has anybody done this?
Appreciate any suggestions!
Terry

Terry,
I spent a few years in a place that employed 20 people in the powder coating area, so we did a bunch of stuff. A clean surface is a huge deal. I'm not sure, but you may have to get the original chrome stripped, to provide good adhesion. At that point, why not rechrome. I'm also a little concerned about powder coating cracking on a thin "flexy" surface. My experience was in a limited application, and there may be coatings that will handle this. My two cents. Mike

They have a industrial chrome like the tank was when new. One dip process not tripple. Tripple is copper, nickle, chrome. You don't really need that. Also my favorite tank is grey spray bomb with a hammer finish. Looks great after 10 years.

Hi Terry. I hate to admit this but I ruined a very good Chilton tank by trying to powder coating it. The solder around the filler neck melted and the bungs for the fuel outlets started to as well. Lucky I was able to resolder the damage and take it to the chrome shop. The one dip process is the way to go. Good luck with your project, Phil.

Guys,
Thanks for all the great info.! Maybe I need to re-post this as "Re-Chroming a Chilton Tank!
Now I'm considering having the "one-dip chrome" process done instead of powdercoating.
Can anyone tell me of a good source for having this done............AND how much does it cost???
I know I can buy a NEW re-pop from Greg Gouveia for $329 or so..........but that's way more than I'd like to spend.
Thanks again,
Terry

Steve,
Thanks for the info. What type of prepping would need to be done? I have access to a glass bead machine/sandblaster but it might be too aggressive to the thin steel?
I'm in South Carolina but shipping wouldn't be a big deal. What's his turnaround time?
Terry
