4-40 Thread R.I.P.

Ever see a pyramid reed cage with the dreaded stripped hole? Don't want to buy a 100 pack of 5-40 screws, the logical repair size? Many Briggs "paint gun" carbs have this screw in the idle adjust arm. Not having a 5-40 tap, i found that by shortening the screw and filing a small chisel point on the end, it would cut a brand new thread and tighten up great. Nothing had to be done to the hole itself. If the slightly higher head hits the inside of the intake, a small flat spot can be filed on the crown. For any 4-40 reed screws that have chewed up slots, the butterfly screws from retired Tecumseh carbs make a very good replacement.
