We're about ready to apply the yellow paint to the 1959/1960 FOX MAK-KART that I'm restoring. The original kart was painted McCulloch yellow and sold to McCulloch Distributors.

The kart will be sprayed in an auto paint booth and then baked if necessary.

Has anyone matched the McCulloch yellow color to any of the major automotive brands???

If you have; please let me know the make and the numbers.

Hi, Dick. Why not just buy the Rustoleum Sunburst Yellow in quart quantities and spray it thru your automotive gun? There are several top restorers who do that for Mac engines. It's as close to Mac yellow as you're going to get, looks great and is as durable as anything out there. They also have a white primer that really makes a good underbase. If you're set on auto paint, get a computer match and go with House Of Color's paint. They can mix anything you can imagine, and are a mainstay of hot rodding. If you'd rather go powdercoat, the RAL 1023 color is VERY close, and can be bought from any powdercoat shop. The powder has a tiny bit less gloss, which matches most paint jobs the kart manufacturers put on our machines. I'm restoring the 1960 Wasp I got from Ron C. to pay tribute to my Dad's first live axle rig, and I will match my metallic blue samples to a powdercoat color. I may even throw in a tiny bit of flattening agent, as Bugs weren't very glossy. After you're done with powdercoat, sit back, admire and forget it! Thanks for the answer to the paint issue.

I use automotive spray paint because the guy who does my fabrication (metalwork) works at a body shop and prefers to spray. My cost is about the same or less than powder coat and I can get the original color or close to it.

I also use the white primer and sunburst yellow for my engines so that's probably the thing to do. I didn't know that we could buy it by the quart.

It looks like the kart will be done for TBO; see you there.

Dick: I think I screwed up. I'm certain that the Rustoleum Sunburst Yellow comes in gallons, but I'm not sure about quarts. Scott Kneisel sprays his engines with a standard gun. Should be as smooth as auto paint and last for eternity. I will spray the block/head on the new Mc5 with Rustoleum, and will powdercoat the inner crankcase cover and flywheel shroud with the RAL 1023 for durability. If the starter belt hits the p'coat, it polishes right out! When the p'coat and the Rustoleum are beside one another, they look the same (close enough for me).
Can't wait to see the completed kart! I always liked the Mak Karts. Charlie and I will not have anything new this year. I'll have the Swoopster; I think Charlie's bringing the Scorpion. We both hope to drive/socialize more and wrench less! We're not bringing the trailer; Charlie's building a rack to fit the bed of the F350, and we'll load the 2 karts inside the truck. Later. Ted

For what its worth you might want to use an etch of some sort on bare aluminum before primer or top coat. I have used vinegar with some dfegree of success but todays off the grocery shelf doesn't have much vinegar in it so not really sure it's worth the effort. I do think a good paint shop could sell some kind of etching tho. Tom

Great shot, Tom! My Pop attended Clinton engine school in Maquoketa, Iowa in 1957. The pictures he brought back from their paint line were very similar except for the red versus yellow!

rustoleum comes in quarts buy at home depot anytime.
can't find the white primer anywhere will look again.
any places that carry it???
