Mc45D......was it real!!

To answer Steve's question....
I have never seen an Mc45D but I do have an IPL for one. The problem is that it is produced by the "long gone" McCulloch Racing Corporation. It looks marked up to me and pictures the engine with a Reed dual manifold with 2 Go Power pyramid reed blocks. The IPL has what looks like a real McCulloch part number for the manifold (47916) but who knows. Does anyone have an an actual McCulloch Corp IPL for an Mc45D??
I am wondering if it is a fabrication by MCRC.
Anyone have thoughts?
Scott
Attached is the IPL I have.

I was communicating with Lynn Haddock and asked him if he ever saw one and he made a similar remark. It's looking like the 45D may be a figment on someones imagination.

I remember back in the day reading a pictorial on South African karting. They mentioned a Mc45D in one of the picture captions. I wondered at the time if it was an engine only sold in foreign countries.. Wish I had that magazine, but it isn't in Charlie's stack of goodies. TJ

Dont remember them being advertised or sold (in Cal) but they are listed on my real Mc publication as being produced from 4/64 to 6/64. I also have an orig. IPL p/n 47917 from Mac, not Havilands Mc Racing. Has dual Reed 470 intake (with name and number still on, mc p/n 47916, unlike the Reed sloper that came on 90s and 100s, name removed). I think I had an orig. label at one time.

It must be real because McCulloch printed an IPL list that I got from a CD off EBAY. If anyone is interested I can print whatever engine you need. I also have a parts list for a Rupp Chapparal Enduro from the mid 60's that I used to race
Thanks,

Merv,
Don't believe everything you see is real. A lot of the literature floating around on the internet is not completely original and was created by the "Vegas" folks long after the real McCulloch Corp stopped dealing in kart motors. I just finished going through 10 Karting World magazines from August 1963 to April 1966 and could not find any advertisements for a Mc45D. Each of the magazines had at least one full page McCulloch factory ad and each has one or more shop ads featuring the current line of Mac motors. The August 63 magazine is still advertising the 8,40, 70 models. My March 1964 and all other magazines dated in 1964 and 1965 after March have ads for the 9, 45, 75 linup. Finally, in the April 1966 edition the 90,100 series has replaced the prior models. One of my issues has a several page article written by Ormel Duke of McCulloch that reviews all of the updates and differences between the 8,40,70 and 9,45,75 lines and there is no mention of any Mc45D in the article. Further, not a single kart shop ad mentions such a motor in any of the magazines. Interestingly, I did find a reference to a Mc 45D in an article about a very cool fully suspended South African built kart. However, the photograph of the rear of the kart clearly shows it is fitted with a Mc45 that has the standard single carb intake and a normal sticker.
It would not surprise me to learn that the Vegas bunch saw that article and decided to create a motor than never really existed just so they could promote it as something rare and valuable
The jury is still out on the subject but someone will have to produce an advertisement offering to sell the model before I would believe it actually existed.
OK guys... hit the books LOL

Steve, you found that South African reference I was trying to recall! I have all Charlie Craibe's old magazines here And if you'll post the magazine and issue, I'll see if it's in the stack. That was a very nifty kart, if memory serves.
Like you, i wonder if the wonderful Nevada outlaws didn't "create" the engine. Maybe they saw that same S.African article! Good sleuthing. TJ
