Mac R-1 Restoration

Post by Jeff Clark » Fri Apr 30, 2010 12:14 pm

Some of you already know about this kart from another board, figured I would share it here. I purchased this kart off a wanted add I ran a few weeks ago, I was very happy with the deal and didnt last long till I decided to get it apart for a restoration, Im taking it back to more as raced then a original new from Mac.
Im still not quite sure if it is a R-1 Or a R-300 it has a number on the lh support the brake rod goes through and a number 3 stamped on top of the seat hoop, also another number 37346322 on the front axle by the throttle pedal.
The kart is quite complete as seen it came with a single 101 engine (at one point it had twins) the uphostery has been redone but used factory pattern.

I took the Kart down to my hobby shop for a tear down and rebuild, I bagged and tagged everything and boxed it up. The floor pan was quite beat so a new one is in order, I kept the rear section in the lower seat hoop and will just weld it at the base.

This wheel is going back on.

Took it out back for a blasting.

Closer inspection showed some damage under the rear frame mount. The kart has been raced hard some gussets have been added and they are staying.

I decided to go a little heavier on the pan than oem, I thought this old kart has been doing alot of flexing over the years and thought it would help with the rigidity, the original looked to be 20 guage .0359 I went with 18 guage .0478

Fitting the pan.

Pan installed.

I sanded the pan before installation, makes life a little easier later.

Hey Jeff-

Looking good! It's almost certainly a R-300, with the giveaway being the tabs on the front axle- in those go bolts to keep the steering from going over center. R1s didn't have them, the R-300s did.

Keep us posted on the progress!

Dean

The tabs are oem, the gussets have been added but tabs appear stock by welds.

The main frame is ready for paint second prime with PPG K-36

I fount this interesting the rear frame section that unbolts has the same number as on the front, I have not seen this posted on any other Mac resto.

I was getting some stuff togeather tonight to send to chrome, I was real worried about letting those pedals out of my sight and have never had good luck on a re chrome on cast, So I decided to go to the dirty room fire up the old polish wheel and see what I coud do with what I have. This is the outcome out of some almost half century old chrome
