two stroke loop scavenging....
I saw this, thought others would enjoy watching it. We have all seen the 2D depictions of how a 2-stroke engine works, with a deflector type piston (aka WB580/700), pretty easy to understand ... but most kart motors are loop scavenged, with no deflector on the piston. This simulation shows how the flow in a loop scavenged motor is designed to "loop" up and around the top of the cylinder, then out the exhaust port. Watch closely from the 9 second mark onward, this is a 3D view where you can see the piston coming down uncovering the transfers and the looping flow that occurs. When you watch this you can get a good idea why boost ports in the back of the cylinder point almost straight up (there are no boost ports shown in this animation, but you can imagine how they would add in a positive way to flow that is taking place in the animation).
