Trouble with rewind starter WB 580

Post by Walt Zahn » Sun Oct 07, 2007 8:00 pm

My rewind starter keeps jumping off the spring. I have had it off several times and I get a few good pulls before I hear the spraing and have most of the rope hanging out! I am not sure what I am doing wrong or what else I can do at this point. I did have to bend a hook into the inner loop of spring as it had broken off. Any help? We just finished reassembling our freshly painted and restored Simplex and want to try and start the rebuilt engine, but this starter thing is stopping us.
Thanks for reading,
Walt

Thanks Virg, but I think that would necessitate obtaining additional, more complicated equipment and I wanted to have this kart so my son could start it on his own for safety considerations. Any other ideas?

We are very new to karting and attended the Big One in Fremont to see what it was all about. I saw guys using those 12V (or chain saw!)powered starter setups. That's what you are talking about, right?

You could just use a rope with a handle on it . There is probley two notch's already on the cup that the recoil engages in . Only one pull at a time  but it works . We did it that way for a while but then made a 12 v starter . Recoil could just need to be taken apart and cleaned up .
Good luck!!!!

Walt,

You have to excuse Virgil, he is into Monza A and B pipes and foreign engines on sidewinder karts. He doesn't understand the concept of keeping karts original. And he definitely doesn't understand 580s

PS: He may have meant nut cup.

Russ, is that for when you're looking at old karts or young women? :P TJ

Thanks for that Tip Don about the rope! Works great until we get the recoil fixed. I had forgot about the rope for when all else fails like on my old Evinrude!

Glad to hear it work's for ya 8-) . As long as the motor is in tune you should'nt have any problem starting it , but if it get's out of tune be prepeared to pull & pull & pull , along with a few choice word's
