a cautionary warning about paypal gift money

Post by david a luciani » Wed Dec 09, 2009 3:30 pm

hi guys,

recently i bought a kart from a fellow that i know.
he'd found a kart but he couldn't buy it ,he knew i wanted that kart so he offered to buy it and send it to me.
since we'd done business and are friends i thought nothing of his request to send the money as a gift instead of sale.
this was to save him the transaction costs of paypal.
so i sent a money paypal gift to him , that was weeks ago.

i've heard every reason for the kart not being delivered but now i'm pretty sure i was burned.
first the fellow that had it did /didn't ship , then it was on the way , then it was at my friends place by accident - then he was shipping it to me - then he started with medical problems.
so last i heard from him he was once again having medical issues but that shouldn't prevent him from returning my calls.
now his mailbox is full.

the problem is even though i sent the money through paypal because it was a gift it's not disputable or recoverable.
currently i'm trying to contact paypal to see if there's options but i kinda think it's not gonna happen.
anyway i'll give him another week to return my calls or get the kart to me then i'll be posting his name to save others trouble or losses.

Your posting brings back all those bad memories in the dealings with the Havilands in Vegas.

ernie,
luckily nothing that bad.
but that spectre does color my thinking.

i'm used to this guy being slow and probably could've waited longer.
the old lady caught wind of this kart and is kinda beserk since i was stiffed on a fairly large amount of money for a job lately.
i'd already bought the kart before this happened but being without the money and kart ain't helping matters.

update is that the person has contacted me and shown me pix of the lost kart.
i am now sure that he at least has it.
i'd like to think he hasn't read this post and just called me
he says he's been sick and is broke so he can't ship right now.
i'd send the money for shipping but that seems not to be what he wants.

as it is this situation has given me a bit of time to reflect on trades and shipping.
i'm not the best at timely shipping on trades and regret being that way.

i think perhaps we should see if one or all the forums would be willing to post a trader/seller rating within the vintage kart community.
perhaps something in line with efee's set up.
it would give people an opportunity to comment on trades good or bad and post when people are slow or unreliable.

just a thought.

Mike,

people years ago knew me for just that sort of thinking.
i was a traveling fool anyway so a quick ride out West wouldn't of bothered me.
But i'm reeeformed single daddy now and i have a daughter to raise.
so i keep in mind that cowboy stuff like that sometimes gets you a "vacation" from the world.

anyway i do know the guy and maybe my prodding on the forum has got the kart on the bus so to speak.
i like to think he was doing it on his own though and didn't see the forum.
hopefully i'll have it by saturday.

My new thought is that we need a rating system for members so we at least know what's up with people we're dealing with across the country.
i just know Jeff Cambell loves me for coming up with all these wonderful ideas that'll cost him a ton of work. ;)
anyway Jeff how about it is this idea a pipe dream or possible?

You will not see a rating system on the REAR forum. Either the guys a deadbeat or good to deal with. Just don't deal with deadbeats. We have posted at length about allsalesisjackhole and everyone is tired of the Havalin, MCracing2000, sean, seth, vintage vixon, and about a dozen other names, brotherinlaws etc.... from Henderson, Nevada saga. If the guy is a deadbeat and didn't follow through feel free to post. BUT please make sure all other venues are exhausted. Be reasonable as somtimes stuff happens, things like toys are not top proirity when your water heater goes out. But that's no excuse for dodging emails and phone calls either.

well said Rob,

it looks good for the kart coming to me .
i won't be revealing any names if he makes good as he's supposed to be my friend too.
as are all vintage karters in my mind.

i for one am not the most prompt at mailing stuff out since my daughter and so forth has to be first.
but i always answer my phone and emails.
i think that's the worst part not knowing what's going on and worrying about being a chump.

i will say that the offers for help were and are amazing and i thank everybody .
and i do apologize for filling space with a headache we've all had at one time or another.
this has taken up way too much space.
I suppose i have to say that Ron has a point about arranging alternatives to shipping a kart.

Funny thing though, i learned a few things about grayhound shipping that might be good to know.
first if you set up an account with them you can C.O.D. things to people.
second if you have an account you can insure past 600 miles and for $1000.00
and third they seem to be changing as you can now track anything you ship if you set up the shipping over the internet.

all in all greyhound might live up to their potential for moving karts across the country cheaply.

Thanks for the info Dave. I shipped a kart to CA and somehow they broke the wheels. Don't ask me how and they were Nylite's on top of it. I know the guy went thru hell tryign to get things straightend out to get a partial refund. Like over a year of messing around.

On another note I know I have stored up to 4 karts for guys to be picked up at TBO. Sometimes they ask me to pick them up
for them and pay the guy and they will send me the kart money and some extra for my time. This gives me an idea. I have some noodling to do............look out!

yep ,

i've done the same on the East Coast.
in fact i picked up a really nice complete original kart up in mass. and delivered it to TBO for a friend.
Gave me an excuse for going for the first time and boy did i have fun.
of course TBO is always fun.

like i've said before if you find a deal up around me let me know and i can get it.
i've driven deep into pa. and up to maine to get karts, i like to see this country up close.
of course finding it before me might be a neat trick!!! (except for Hal who finds the darndest karts)
there aren't many events near me so i have to travel anyway and i have a big truck.
