McCulloch Super Series Inner Shrouds

Post by Alan Warn » Sat May 09, 2009 1:21 am

Are all Super Series inner shrouds interchangable? (Does a MC 20,30, 45, 75, 100 inner shroud fit a 101 AA?) Are the ignition parts in the shroud the same? Thanks

If by "inner shroud" you are referring to the cast part that supports the flywheel side bearing and seal and provides the mounting location for the points and condenser, then the answer is yes, they are all the same starting with the Mac 20. The Mac 10 is similar but the points location is different.

They are interchangeable, meaning that they will fit and function, but there are at least 2 different types of Super crankcase side covers. The way I tell them apart is by looking at the ribs running to one of the nut holes, the earlier ones have a single rib, the newer covers (stronger) have 3 ribs. The newer covers are also beefed up around a couple of the side cover mounting screw holes and also around the flywheel holder hole.

Of course, a few people out there are now saying, what the heck is he talking about, what is a flywheel holder hole? I don't know if that is the correct name or not, but it is the side cover hole that a pin can be inserted through to engage one of the 2 slots on the flywheel (180 degs apart), to lock the flywheel for servicing the engine. A neat feature that has saved me many a time at the track.

If you are building a part correct show motor, then it will matter which cover you use.

The ignition parts seem to be all the same for fit and function, but if you are getting deep into the details for building a show motor, there probably are some very fine differences in period of components.

Actually that hole takes a 1/4" shafted bolt which in turn places the flywheel in the correct position and then the points are set to there correct gap same on all the Reed valved engines.

Thanks much guys. I now know what parts I need to buy. Anyone have any 101 flywheel or inner shrouds they want to sell? Thanks again

Hey MacBob, believe it or not, I'm not very good at sucking up, but that did sound pretty good, didn't it? I'm getting better!
