Greetings:
Just joined this evening and I am attempting to identify a kart I have owned since the 80s. I bought it from a kart racer when he went to a siddewinder kart, so I know this was raced. The wheels have MARGAY on them, so I thought that was the kart manufacturer.
Another site told me it might be a Lancer, but I am unfamiliar with that manufacturer. It's been stored outside under a tarp for 10 years, so nothing works. The project at hand is to rebuild it for, and with, my 10 year old grandson.
Can anyone help ID this kart? Here's the link:

Re: Is this a Lancer Kart?
Hi
Its a super k dart kart made by Rupp industries built about 1961 , it has had some serious mods done to it . I know because I own 2 of them . The tell tail is the brackets on each frame rail behind the seat . they held a fuel tank mounted crossways between them .
The seat back tank is incorrect. it has had the steering hoop changed , it has had a front porch added and a series of nerf bars hung on it .

Re: Is this a Lancer Kart?
Newbie questions:
1. Why would one add a "front porch?" The pedals are now way too far forward for my grandson so did the guy add to the front just to move the pedals?
2. If the front was added, can I simply remove it and move the pedals back?
3. As I stated I am going to put a 3 or 5 Briggs on there for my grandson and remove those side bars. Will I be committing any sort of vintage kart crime here? Seems like a lot of butchering has been done already.
Thanks for the identification help. I plan to ask a lot more questions before I will easily grasp the obvious.

Re: Is this a Lancer Kart?
Ken,
From the looks of that chassis I would use great caution trying to make it driveable. The frame material around the front axle looks very compromised and may not be safe even used as a slow kart with a low powered motor. The tubing used on that model kart is pretty thin wall stuff and even modest decomposition would leave it very weak.
Look close and use good judgement.... your grandson's Mom might come after you with a stick if you turn him loose in an unsafe toy
