gk800 questions

Post by david a luciani » Sun Jan 25, 2009 6:38 pm

Hi all,
on my 3 gk800's
i have determined that one gokart 800 is a probably 1960 (it has a 3/4 " seat hoop)
and the other two are 1961's (1" seat hoops)
now my problem,
i've been told that gkl800's came with posistop brakes in 1960 and bendix drum brakes in 1961.
what is confusing is that one of the two with 1" seat tube has the posistop square tube welded in the correct position.my assumption is that this is factory and might just be an early 1961 before they changed to drum brake.

my second issue, on the 60 and one of my 61's the portion behind the seat has been chopped up alot. the motor perches are gone and the cross tube just behind the seat isn't there. the one i've been cleaning up i've found grinding and weld evidence where the motor perches were but there is no weld or grinding marks where the cross tube should be. is it possible that there wasn't one there? any help or info would be appriciated.
and lastly i have some questions about brakes.
1. was 1961 gk800 brakes only drum brakes or were some posistops?
2. are the azusa posistop brakes that they show in their catalog the same as what was on gk800's ?
3. which side were the drum brake on ?
thanx for any help dave

I'm sure Jeff Troy or someone will post a picture. I sold him a Go Kart 800 frame with a sissor brake on the left rear motor mount but I forget how it was attached.

Hi Dave,

In answer to questions 2. and 3......

The Posi-Stop brake that is currently available, I believe is the same unit as the 1960 one.

The drum brake was mounted on the left side, (as when sitting in the kart).

Hope this helps.

John
