Lancer Kart Nerf Bar Question

Hi,
A friend of mine has a Lancer kart that he is restoring. It is a 1965model and has nerf bars welded in front of the rear tires. Enclosed is a photo.

The welds are nice but the sharp bends are terrible. Could these be original equipment? If so, they will be left alone but if not, we will gladly cut them off.

I would appreciate any input on this.
