Please reply back as to which saw motor you have with the extra material and removable head. You have my curiosity up. The first pic without extra material is actually a 1-40.

This should add a little to the Mc49 engine evolution.
I have pictures of my kids karts in color from the late 60's that have Mc49C engines. I bought the engines new at different times for three karts.
The first engine was all yellow. The second engine had a black inner shroud and yellow outer shroud. The last 2 engines I bought for a dual 49 class had black & yellow shrouds like #2. All 4 engines had decals on the outer shroud similar to the one that Scott Kneisel re-produced. They all had flatback carbs.
All of the engines had recoils on them and it looks like they were all black. The view of the all yellow engine recoil isn't too good but it looks black.
I've been trying to post the pictures but the site keeps telling me that the quota has been exceeded. It doesn't matter if the size is big or small. If someone wants copies let me know and I will Email them to you.

Steve, it looks like a Mc15 saw block may be the hot ticket to make that Mc49A. Fortunately they are plentiful and cheap.

The Mac 15 seems to have the same port config as the Mc49a, 2/2/2, but has the ribs and extra material. If you add a different intake and carb to a stock Mac 15 how does it compare to a Mc49a with the same intake and carb? Can the ribs and extra material be removed? How much difference does it make? Also does the stepped crank adapter and different clutch make much difference in performance?
Same questions for the early Mac 250 which I think has ports 3/3/3. How does a stock 250 with different carb and intake compare to a Mc49c which has ports 3/3/3.

The original 49M/C had a 3/4" pto shaft --it also had the larger BDC carb like the 91 and 101 model on a sloper manifold -- these engines were all three surplus from the Byrd mini bike company and were introduced into the karting ranks when Horstman acquired them from McCulloch after Byrd went out of business. Horstman supplied them with both the 3/4" shaft as well as a normal 9/16" "karting" crankshaft.
