820 vs Mc 91B1....
Jay Mendoza let me drive his A-Bone with a 91B1 at Adams this year and we entered it in the 125cc class just for extra track time and won the two heats we ran. Second place kart was running a Bonbright 820 with a nice overhead pipe and did have more bottom end but could not complete the pass even on the long Adams straights. There were several 820s in the group along with a few 101s too.
The 91B1 was all stock except we used a BDC 16 alky carb rather than the BDC gas carb that comes on the motor.
Of course, the results would suggest that the 91B1 is better than the 101s and we all know that isn't the case so it really all comes down to setup, tuning, handling of the kart, clutch, exhaust system, choice of fuel etc.
Fundementally the 820 is a good engine and the differences in the makes and sizes is only a small part of the formula for overall performance.
Pick your make of choice and work with it.... they can all give good performance.
You should see how Louie makes a PP run... awesome!

Re: west bend 820 vs mcculloch 91
It's interesting to see what engine someone likes. In the early to mid 60's the 820's were the hot engine; either B Limited or duals. I suppose that's why old guys like me like them. The fast 91B1 and 101's came later in the 60's and early 70's.
My kids ran 49's from the start of the rookie class and I suppose that's why I enjoy working on them now. I had a lot of hours making the stock class motors run fast. There's way too many things that go into a fast kart and motor combination like Steve listed. But that's why we're having soo much fun.
I never owned any West Bend 700's or 580's, Power Products, etc. I did have a pair of B-Bombs on a Rupp K-Kart enduro but I'm not interested in putting something like that together today. If I did I would probably hurt myself.
I would guess that whatever you were familiar with back when you raced in the vintage period is what you like to run and work on today.

PS; I'm looking for good stories for the VKA magazine and Newsletter on mechanical things. Send me an e-mail at teal@charter.net if you've got something to share. We don't need secrets today so open up about what you found to make a winner.

Don t forget the driver in these dicussions. Several of the responders here can run the pants off of anyone with a good handling kart.A couple of these guys are former National Champs and probably can make a stock Briggs flat head outrun us, ha ha ha .
