Re: TBO is coming!
Rob, I dream of attending every year but it's 2600 road miles to Seattle from Anchorage. I have a 58 Caretta and a 61 Cate's that I have ready to go. I can't leave because I'm in a battle with the management of my Native Corporation, Sealaska. They want to clear cut another 60 thousand acres of the Tongass Forest to go along with the other 189 thousand acres they have already clear cut. The Tongass is the last old growth forest in the USA.

Hate to get off subject but I'm trying to show these guy's up here in Alaska that their engines have other uses then chainsaws.
If you wish Rob I'll delete this posting.

Re: TBO is coming!
There's a joke among the Natives here in Alaska, Mcbob. One hundred years ago the people lived in ice houses and they were warm and cozy. Then the white man showed the people how to live in wood houses, and the Natives have been freezing their asses off ever since.
80% of our wood goes to Japan for toilet paper. They buy our logs because they want to save their forests.
How about a close up of one of your saws, that might be interesting.
If you want to debate clear cutting this isn't the place for it. I've started a page on "facebook" Sealaska Shareholders Underground your welcome there.

Ron Cubel just left here 30 minutes ago, heading East. He'll be at Fremont before Charlie and I will. See you all soon! TJ

Ted,
here are a couple of pics so others can see my starter. Only thing different now is I removed the dual carbs and put a single HL355 alky carb on it.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again. We'll be in Fremont Friday around noon.

Re: TBO is coming!
Hey, George! I had him holler up the stairs so I'd get up, too. Thought I'd go back to sleep, but us old folk can't get back to sleep once we get up!
Stan, I think I will have to build a starter like yours for next season. The Mac 35 is getting old and fragile. Besides, it's HEAVY with that 90 degree gearbox and 10 LBS of excess castings! Maybe I can get you to make me a set of the handles and tank mount. I might use a lighter engine with lower compression than the West Bend. A '49 with a belt clutch should work very well. I'd just water jet a side plate for the Mac, and water jet the base plate with a protrusion so you can step on the base while you pull the recoil. I just added a 1/4" aluminum plate like that to the bottom side of the Mac 35. Seems to work fine. I added a far better belt guide/retainer as well. Didn't add much weight, but the doggone thing was already a tank. If you're willing to make the handles, we could just trade for the 610 block maybe?
We'll see you Friday! TJ

Re: TBO is coming!
Ted,
You're right! I didn't realize how early on in the project that pic was. I added an extension to the base plate to have something to step on and also added a belt guard. An old mac would be a bit lighter and easier to start. The 820 has considerable compression, even with stacking a couple of head gaskets. Easy to guess why I need the 610 block!!
