A New Record?
When you go on to ebay, you know it will be, if nothing else, fun. It appears that half of the world population is selling something. It's fun to play the "how in the hell did he come up with that price" game. The guy with the vintage racing Manco, will soon find out that it's not worth the $1500 that his buddy said it was.
Since we are in a hobby where we are at the mercy of what ever the market will bare, it can drive you a little crazy. The topper was this morning. West Bend 820 hop up kit. It consisted of one HR194 carb, an intake, and reeds, only $639, buy it now, no bidding. Yow. I can't even think of an appropriate comment to such a deal.

Hey Vinnie-
Ever seen this ad. Theo placed back in the 70's? Burt Reynolds mutton chops and snake skin print speedo?
Damn, I am scarred for life. The $639 seems pretty high, but figure $100-150 for the carb. The manifold appears to be hand built by a machinist, figure labor, materials etc. it is easy to see why someone would ask that amount....Getting it is another matter. A lot of folks are lucky to have the skills, machinery and/or connections to stuff built on the cheap. On at least one occasion I got stuck paying $60/hr shop rate for a custom piece and that gets EXPENSIVE fast.

Re: A New Record?
Guys, am I wrong in thinking that this is just a stock 820 Copperhead manifold and HR? Sure looks the same to me. TJ

Re: A New Record?
Ted,
The manifold and reeb block with reeds is the one that is used on the Copperhead and the Vintage 820 that Bonbright sells. The HR carb if new may cost $200. I think someone took the manifold off and put either a Gem V-12 or Vince's copy of the V-12 base on his engine.
The price seems a little steep to me because I was lucky to buy a NOS directional flow V-12 for $300 and you can get new HL 1.00 inch alcohol carbs for $100 each. I paid too much for the manifold but it was still shrink wrapped.

Re: A New Record?
Dick: Thought so. The manifold/reeds are nice, but I'd think thrice before paying $639 for the set! Gotta give Dave B. credit, there's a helluva lot of reed area there! I bought one of Vince's JSJ V-12's and a pair of Terry/Will's reed cages and a large single top adapter for a lot less money. Maybe the V-12 isn't enough reed for a fully modified 820, but I only have 610's. TJ

Re: A New Record?
Oh, so that's what the Copperhead intake looks like....Hadn't seen one up close and personal. In that light asking $600 for the intake when you can get the whole motor for a $1000 seems a bit excessive
I was thinking it was a hand built one off that someone carved out of billet, in which case it would represent HOURS of labor.
Watching Ed Sahagian do machine work has really opened my eyes out how much time it takes to build seemingly simple custom parts. My hat is off to the guys that have the fabrication skills. I wish they hadn't killed off all the tech/voc schools where I grew up, it sure would come in handy to have the skills when it comes time to restore my fleet of rust buckets
When I finally get the shop finished, I am definitely going to find a small milling machine so I can start learning to do more. Clausing made a really cool small mill back in the late 60's early 70's that had a really small foot print and was still pretty capable.
Unfortunately, I won't make the Big One this year. I was looking forward to see what goodies the dynamic duo's Charlie/Ted & Torque/Canady where going to pull out of their hats. This economy really sucks.

Re: A New Record?
Dan! I'm sorry that we won't be seeing you again this year. We always look forward to you. Charlie and I won't have anything new this year; Charlie's bringing the Scorpion with my 9-port 610 on his Margay gearbox, and I'm bringing the Swoopster/101. We just want a little track time and socializing, assuming the karts run. YOU CAN NEVER TELL what nifties Jack and Al will show up with! You'll miss Dick Teal's Mak Kart/dual Mc6's; it really looks gorgeous.
The comment about the work a good machinist can do is so true! I always try hard to design my parts so that there is as little machining as possible; it takes so much skill and time. TJ
