Even before my time
I have a West Bend 700 5 port mounted on a dead axle 58 Caretta. I raced in the McCulloch era. What is a 700WB equivalent to, Mac49, Mac5?
I realize the 5 port didn't come along until the sixties but the tank hides that fact.

Re: Even before my time
Dominic,
I raced against a pair of modified West Bend 700 5 port engines in early 1960. I had a pair of stock Mc6 engines on a Fox original 1959/60 Mak-Kart. We raced at Milton Junction, WI just north of Janesville, WI. I was able to beat the other kart consistantly with the Mc6 engines. I don't remember what kart the other guy had but we were on a small oval and this took the road race equation out of the picture.
I would guess that they are pretty similar to Mc5's because of this.

Re: Even before my time
Dominic,
I'm in the process of restoring one of the few remaining (4 that I know of) Fox 59/60 Mak Karts with a pair of 6's just the way it was back then. It may be available this year but it will be late. I'm guessing that it will be next year because there are too many other things going on.
Have fun,
Dick Teal

Re: Even before my time
Dominic,
Here's a picture of a 1959 with a pair of Mc5's that was taken by Bob Lapke's dad in 1960 at the Fox factory store. The 59/60 frame was a little different where the seat sides are.

Re: Even before my time
Hi Dick,I have noticed that the Mak-kart came in 2 versions, one with the "gussets" by the side of the seat hoop & one without. My Mak-Kart has them. What year does that make it? It had a Mc10 on it. Also have a Fox "consessionaire" waiting to be restored. That came with a Clinton 4 stroke! THANKS! Carl

Re: Even before my time
Carl,
The kart in the front is either a late 59 or a 1960 model. The parts list I attached is for the earlier model. The literature I have shows it as a 1959 model. It's very similar to the later version but notice the tubes in the seat area. The later versions were like the first one in your picture.
I raced one like the one you have and I know that it was a late 1959 or 1960. I don't have any paper on that version. I also have the original 1/2 scale layout drawing for the 1959 model.
Your 59/60 kart is either number 4 or number 5 that I know of. Ron Carbough has one; there's one in Monroe, WI that is pretty great because it was original when it was found including a pair of Power Products 58's. Mine came out of Indiana and Cubel said that there was one out east that I haven't seen.
I would have to see a better picture of the kart in the background to see if it is a 1959. I haven't seen any around. The later version was designed for the Mc10 engines when they came out. It was sold to McCulloch distributers. The attached files show the later version in the picture but notice that the drawing shows the earlier version that I posted and it was taken in the factory store.

Re: Even before my time
We ran a 5 port 580 that was fairly competitive in a sportsman class in 1963. But it was kind of like running a flathead Ford, after the small block Chevy came out. I do remember that porting, dual carbs, and replacing the caged needle rod bearings with Mac 10 needles, made it at least competitive. Then we got a modified Mac 6. We all know how that story ends.
