This was my idea for a dyno back when I was building Harley racing engines, it required getting the front axle/spindle, brake drum and the air chamber actuator from a large diesel over the road tractor out of a a salvage yard, building the needed fixture(s) for mounting and coupling the engine to the brake drum, either belt or chain driven, mounting a torque meter and an air system to actuate the brake shoes by a control valve, getting a water cooling system that was used years ago by the western mountain truckers that sprayed water directly on the drum for cooling..this might have been an after thought as there would have been up to 288 square inches of braking surface depending on drum selected, so heat may not have been an issue for short runs, construct it so the operator didn't get a shower from the water flying of the drum as it spun. Have fun! I didn't get to this project but sounded logical/viable and it would accomplish the tasks at hand :) TL

I've been around a few dyno pulls, and it appears that, the more sophiticated the dynomometer, the more relevent the infomation. Increasing horsepower, or torque are important, but where in the rpm range they occur is equally impotant.
With a four stroke engine, a different cam, intake manifold, or heads can make a huge difference. If you get less than optimal results, components can be replaced.
On a two stroke where porting is so critical, it becomes a very expensive matter, possibly scapping a few blocks until you get it right. I saw the "cubic money" guys do this in the sixties.
It's only one opinion. but there is a wealth of knowledge out there. Talk to people, get a good engine together, go have fun, give that extra money to charity. For the most part, the faster it goes, the closer to being a hand grenade it becomes.
