Books On Small Engine Repair, Rebuilding & Performance Mods?

Post by John Miller » Mon Oct 05, 2009 11:31 pm

I'm seeking recommendations on books that cover small engine repair, complete rebuilding (Not just a simple overhaul) & most of all... Performance modifications.

I'm interested in both 2 & 4-stroke engines so more than one book will most likely be needed. I've been considering one of the books listed here: http://www.rearenginekarts.com/karting%20books.htm
This one here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ ... 5Fcode=xm2

While I was looking at that listing of various Karting books. I saw one that I used to own as a youngster. "The Green Galloper" I remember it as being a fairly good book. It would be interesting to read it now.

John,
As a kid I received as a gift "All About Small Gas Engines" by Jud Purvis, 1963. Awesome book. It touches on all kinds of small engines of that period, including the West Bend 580 I recall. Amazon shows 10 used copies available, ASIN: B0012FY1UC. Hard-cover, 304 pages.

If you go to http://www.mercguy.com/boating_store.htm, you can see a photo and a brief write-up, and he has one for sale at $10.

Note: although it covers a good bit of theory, it is not a "hop-up" book.

John, look up SMALL ENGINES service manual by INTERTEC. I have the 15th edition. It covers engines of less than 15 cubic inches, covers two and four cycle engines, Mc Culloch, Clinton, Homelite, West Bend (Chrysler) Power Products etc. 26 Manufactures in all. Does not cover any modifications, lots of engine specs. 8 1/2 x 11, 400 pages.
