WB700 timing?

Howdy!

I've gone through all my literature and I can't find timing settings for the WB700. I started with a very low-hours 3-port 700 and built a kart motor for a friend using a Fuller piston and the v-reed intake from the 5-port and a Tillotson HL227. It runs okay, but after a couple of hours of running, it just doesn't feel like it's putting out the power that it should. You basically cruise around in it. The only drifting you can do is to scrub off speed after you've gone into the corner at full speed, not the regular throttle steering type. I had a chance to drive a kart with a stock 580 5-port, and it was like night and day - I know the 580v5 will put out a little more, but this was a totally different experience.

When I put the motor together, I had just set the timing on the stator at where it had always been as evidenced by the bolt marks. As I said, it starts easy and idles fine, I know I was running it a little fat since the motor was still a little new, but still, a nice medium brown color when taking a plug reading. I'd like to actually check the timing knowing what setting it should be at.

Any tips? Never having goofed around with a WB700 before, I'm not sure what the baseline is- where should it be performance-wise when compared to a 580 5 port or a stock MC6- when taking into account that it has a better intake manifold and is now running higher compression?

Also, the engine is mounted on a Go Kart 800 with 4.10/3.50x5s and the gearing is 6.8:1 not sure if a 7:1, or 7.2:1 would work better. I know the benders don't wind as high as the Macs, but I'm not sure if a gear change would make the kart happier.

One of the manual's I have says 5/32 BTDC. One other thing it says is reed stops should be set at 1/4".

Also, the stator position for 70001 - 70013 should be medium range, and 70017 - 70023 should be full retard. (Taken from the Small engines service manual).

I've found they really come alive with the ignition fully advanced.
